Would you like to Participate in a Fam Tour?

'Fam Tours' (or 'Familiarization' tours) are usually requested either directly, through PR companies, or through Vancouver Coast & Mountains. Travel writers, photographers and videographers who are interested in writing an article or submitting videos or photos for magazines, newspapers, online travel sites, etc.,  approach PR companies or VCM and ask them about the possibility of a fam tour to the Sunshine Coast. These people advise about the kind of article or pictures they want to create, and that determines where they go and the kind of experience that is provided for them.

Another way that fam tours are arranged is by the presence of VCM at the various Travel & Tourism trade shows, such as the TMAC (Travel Media Assn. Of Canada) conference that was held in Vancouver.  SpectacularInk (a PR company) arranged for 6 travel writers to visit the Sunshine Coast as an add-on to the conference, and this was done months in advance so that those media interested could arrange to extend their stay in advance of the trade show.  In addition, through their presence at TMAC, SpectacularInk was approached by an award winning photographer who also asked about coming here to take photos.  So for one conference alone, we have the opportunity for 6 writers to create one or more articles each, as well as getting some great images of the Coast through a contra deal made with the photographer, plus he will be going out and selling his images to other media.

The job of Sunshine Coast Tourism is to provide the best possible experience according to the particular requests of each of the fam tour participants.  Some want a high end experience with lavish accommodations, fine dining, spas, etc., while others want a more rugged visit including camping, hiking, kayaking, etc.  So we must make the arrangements in accordance with the request of each visting  media:
  • Appropriate accommodation for the particular fam tour
  • Great dining, both casual and fine dining, and even box lunches
  • Activities such as marine tours, spa treatments, snowshoeing, kayaking, hiking etc.
  • Find locations with great vistas for photographers
We always try to showcase our members first, but we do offer a one-time-only opportunity for non-members to participate if it fills a particular need requested by the media visitor.

Our members have been extremely generous in their donations to date, and because of that we have been able to put together some amazing tours, resulting in excellent articles about the Sunshine Coast in a variety of publications and on the internet.  And often these articles contain specific information on some of the businesses who participate in the fam tours by providing their services to these members of the media.
